Binary floating point numbers workbook

At last!! A workbook dedicated to making binary floating-point numbers easy to understand for all pupils. This work booklet will take about four - six double lessons for most pupils to complete.
There are lots of worked examples here, clearly explained step-by-step. Pupils are set tasks of increasing difficulty. Many of these make use of templates to guide pupils through the steps towards the solution. Answers are given to all questions in the back of the booklet!
The workbook starts by briefly recapping how 2s complement works and then demonstrates the fixed-point numbering system. Skill in both these numbering systems are required for floating-point numbers. Examples (with commentary) are then given, showing how positive and negative denary numbers are represented. Examples are also given showing how binary floating-point numbers are returned to their denary values.
Clear explanations of floating-point normalisation and how to achieve it are given, the accuracy verses range trade-off is clearly explained and finally the workbook looks at how to work out the maximum and minimum values that can be held by any binary floating-point structure, again with examples and commentary. This workbook can be used for self-study or in class. Students write all their answers in the workbook and then keep this to aid their revision.
